The FLAT + V-shaped Dripper

wp:paragraph

It was a great surprise to see people using the Sibarist FLAT FAST Specialty Coffee Filters in a conical dripper during the Brewers Cup Championship. Crazy right? We were very excited about this unexpected use but we are true believers of experimenting and obtaining different outcomes.

So, what happens when you use the FLAT in a V-60? It results in a super FAST drawdown almost like boosting a CONE+V60 extraction. This combo gives a quicker drawdown compared to the classic CONE+V60 setup, so it's great if you're looking for a fast drawdown.

With this combination (FLAT+V60) the drawdown flow depends a lot on the V60 design, the contact surface of the filter with the dripper affects the extraction flow, less contact surface faster extraction, in other words, you will reach faster extractions using the FLAT + the Origami dripper than the FLAT + the Hario drippers.

The drawdown flow depends a lot on the V60 design and the contact surface of the filter with the dripper, so it's important to rinse the filter well and place it carefully. The filter isn't designed for the V60 drippers, but with careful placement, it can work. Just keep in mind that with some drippers, the combo can block the airflow between the filter and dripper walls, so proper placement is key.

In the graphic above, it is possible to observe the different drawdown flow between an extraction using the CONE vs the FLAT filter in a V60 with different grind setups. The graphics represents the extraction in a Hario 02 V60. The flow can be faster with less contact drippers like the Origami, but in this case the grind impact on the total extraction time will be lower between grinds.
